President Asif Ali Zardari has appointed Justice Yahya Afridi as the next Chief Justice of Pakistan. He will assume the role on October 26, 2024. Justice Afridi has a strong background in law. Yahya Afridi began his studies at Aitchison College in Lahore. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Economics from Government College Lahore. He then completed a Master’s in Economics from Punjab University, Lahore.
Career in the Judiciary
Justice Afridi became a judge in 2010. He started at the Peshawar High Court. In 2016, he made history by becoming the first judge from the Federally Administered Tribal Areas to lead the PHC. He was promoted to the Supreme Court in 2018.
Changes in Selection Process
Justice Mansoor Ali Shah was initially the senior judge in line to be Chief Justice. But the new Constitution (26th Amendment) Act changed the process. A 12-member committee now selects the Chief Justice from the three most senior judges. This change led to Justice Afridi’s nomination.
